Addy eats fruit, walks in no shoes
Reading Virginia Woolf, early morning
Dew will go between her toes as she reads aloud
Livi clumsily crawls and picks up a large messenger bag and TV tray before walking upright on the sidewalk hummng a tad
Livi’s ma with feathered cap, green make-upped neck and a velvet costume, pulls up next to her in a beater truck and yells from the window:
“Cut me up and look inside, leave me with nowhere to hide from you
Or your eyes inside my heart that shine so bright, and darken the shadows
So we can see our enemies and what needs mending”
Addy lies beneath the stars in her bedroom, wishing on the plastic ones, one by one
But Addy outside the stars are falling, getting close enough to be listening in
So leave the ones that seem so dull, left above your window
Climb out bed, fasten your coat, leave on the side a letter wrote
Head out the door into the night, an evening overflowed with light
Follow the path right to the gate, and when I awake I will say:
“Cut me up and look inside, leave me with nowhere to hide from you,
Or your eyes inside my heart that shine so bright, and darken the shadows,
So we can see our enemies and what needs mending”
